Feedback...
I went for a late night lazy photoshoot tonight. Nothing earthshattering to write home about, except I'm liking this series on the boardwark. I'm digging the odd angle and shadows, and I've been trying to improve my textures, so the grain of the wood is pleasing.

I'm having a tough time figuring out which approach to post processing and angle I like best though, so I thought I'd throw it out there: which one do you like best (or none might be an answer - I don't get offended) and why.

Boardwalking I

Boardwalking II

Boardwalking III

thanks,
B

Yo. I don't like the BW one of these 3.... I like the depth of the textures that colour offers and the shadows hide a lot of the detail (just appears as black).

Of the two colour ones... they are both very different. The third one has a feel of starting a journey. The foot is planted, not moving and at the start of a trip, while the first one is in motion in the middle of a trip. The feeling taken from both of these are very different. Neither one is netter, just different. I like the lines and the composition in the third one (the nuts on the board walk and the photo is leveled more) but the first one is off kilter... still cool!

Who was this? Speak for yourself!

Great comments. I love how other people notice many things I don't. Always interesting.

No. 1 is probably my favourite - warm light and plenty of texture. Generally agree with Anonymous on the black and white version - doesn't quite do the subject justice, plus 1/2 of it is draped in shadow. Keep up the lazy, late night photoshoots!

I like the shadows in 2 and the warmth in 1, the wood also looks really nice in both of the coloured ones. 3 grabbed me the least for some reason. mima

The black and white really does leave out most of the mysterious aspects of the scene, I think. Of the two coloured shots, both drew me in, but the first makes me think the most. The tiny nick of light on the heal makes the mind wander (to where the person is going, I suppose, like Steve said), whereas the chuck of shoe in the third is too easy, too blunt. That said, the line of bolt holes is great in III. Of them all, Boardwalk I is my favourite. It's the exact same thinner board in every picture, isn't it?
I like the worm's eye view theme these days, B. (Boardwalk following the self portrait at the National Gallery.)

..chuck is too easy. very nicely put.

I liked the shadows in II as well, but couldn't decide if they were overwhelming. I should have left a version of that in colour to play with .

I, too, like #1, partly because I'm such a sucker for texture, and the nearest board has so much. The lighting is more intriguing in that one. (p.s. Please write another entry about your impressions of Cambridge/pic of your room/what is daily living like?) Or send your mother an email!)

I like #2 the most because it reminds me of german expressionist angles and composition. It has perspective which draws the eye forward to the blackness at the end and portends something a little metaphysical for the individual suggested by the legs.

The other two are a little cheesy for me, although colour is nice in #1.

I like the position of the foot much better in the third one, as it seems to frame the photo and point in the direction of the wood, and thus the texture. As with everyone else, I like the warmness of the first and the angle of the wood panels seems to bring out the texture even more. Once again, the shadows in the second one are a little much, but it make a good candidate for a cat-burglar scene, with someone sneaking away.

I think they're all crap and you should maybe try oil painting

Your mother is right (as they commonly are), the texture on the wood in #1 is best and that is really what is going to make a photo like this have more of an impact.

#1 rules. Don't like the B&W (although I'm a huge fan of B&W) and #3is too linear, in my view. Kindof predictable. Like the break in the boards that creates the shadow and discontinuity.
